The Vikings have given the right-of-first-refusal tender to restricted free-agent fullback Naufahu Tahi on Wednesday. The tender offer means the Vikings can keep Tahi by matching any offer he receives from other teams in free agency. The signing period for free agents begings=at 11 p.m. Thursday. Should the Vikings not match the offer made by another team, they would not receive any draft-choice compensation because Tahi was as an undrafted player. Tahi received the lowest possible tenderthe Vikings could make which was $1.01 million for restricted free agents. Tahi played in all 17 games in 2008, including the playoffs.

Kevin Williams and Pat Williams have June trial date set

A federal judge has set a trial date of June 15 for Minnesota Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, who tested positive for a banned substance last season. Both players are asking for monetary damages in addition to having a four-game suspension from the NFL overturned. The NFL players' union has said that the league didn't properly inform the players that a supplement called StarCaps contained the banned diuretic bumetanide. Bumetanide is often used as a masking agent for the detection of steroids. Both players were suspended late last season but got an injunction in the middle of December that allowed them to play in the playoffs. The suspensions would begin next season if they are upheld at the trial.

Vikings sign CB Charles Gordon to one year contract

Cornerback Charles Gordon has agreed to a one-year deal to return in 2009 to the Minnesota Vikings. Exact terms and numbers of the contract are not yet known. Gordon was the Vikings third cornerback until early November, when he severely injured his ankle in a 28-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome. Gordon has commented after the 2008 season that he would be ready for training camp. Gordon suffered the ankle injury returning a punt in that game. Gordon had started two of the nine games in which he played in the 2008 season, and saw significant time because he was the nickel cornerback in the Vikings defense.

Vikings Close To Trading For Texans QB Sage Rosenfels

The Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings are reportedly close to a completing trade that would send Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the Vikings, possibly for a fourth-round draft pick, the Houston Chronicle newspaper reported on Monday. The trade can't officially happen until the new NFL league year opens at the end of this week. This is the second year in a row that the Vikings have shown interest in trading for Rosenfels, who is near the end of his contract. Rosenfels hoped to be traded to the Vikings last year with desires of starting for a team that has running backs Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor and has led the NFL in run defense for two consecutive seasons. Last year the Vikings reportedly offered a third-round draft choice for Rosenfels, but the Texans asked for a second-round pick. Both clubs denied an offer was made. The Vikings currently have quarterbacks Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson on their roster and will want to extend Rosenfels' contract if indeed a trade is completed.

Vikings hire Diron Reynolds as defensive line assistant coach

The Vikings have hired Diron Reynolds to assist defensive line coach Karl Dunbar. Reynolds played linebacker at Wake Forest from 1990-93, and earned his degree in communications. He was a member of the team that won the 1992 Independence Bowl. After graduation, Reynolds spent two years coaching football, basketball and track at Brooklyn-Cayce High School in Columbia, S.C. Following that, he served as a graduate assistant at Wake Forest from 1997-98, where he earned his master’s degree in liberal arts. He was promoted to outside linebackers coach for the Demon Deacons in 1999, and held that post for two years. Reynolds spent one year (2001) teaching the defensive tackles at Indiana University, where he worked under Cam Cameron, the head coach for the Hoosiers at the time. Reynolds then spent five-years as the defensive quality control coach with the Indianapolis Colts from 2002-06. Reynolds spent the 2007 season as the Miami Dolphins defensive line coach but was fired after that season as the team made wholesale changes to its coaching staff. Reynolds replaces Brendan Daly, who left the team to become the defensive line coach for the St. Louis Rams.

Vikings QB Frerotte thinks he earned right to be starter

Although he is do a March roster bonus and has not heard from the Vikings recently, quarterback Gus Frerotte thinks he has earned the right to start in 2009. Frerotte signed a two-year, $3.75 million contract with the Vikings in 2008, but he knows there might be other quarterback options in the free-agent market, but some of them would be expensive.

"I was only in the offense for six months, so I should get a lot better with another year under my belt," he said. "I think I've earned the right to be a starter. It wasn't handed to me. I went in and played well and gave everything I had to the team."

"I think some of them come with a high price tag," Frerotte said. "Do you pay all that money for Matt Cassel in New England?"

Frerotte believes the Vikings can go a long way next year.

"We have the pieces there," Frerotte said. "We just have to see what happens. I think every year teams lose key players. It's whether you can keep those core guys around and keep adding little pieces here and there."

Early 2009 Vikings Salary Cap Numbers

Filed under 2009 Salary Cap, News

Here is an early look at the Minnesota Vikings 2009 salary cap situation. Mind you that these numbers are not exact, but to the best of all my research and figuring they are a close representation. The first number is the 2009 base salary of players under contract and the second number is the estimated 2009 cap charge should they make the roster. The 2009 NFL salary cap is set to be 123 million dollars per team this year and to the best of my knowledge, the Vikings are right close to about 103 million. This means they are roughly 20 million under the cap at this current time.

Updated 3/19/09 - Updated new players and contracts. When applying the rule of 51, the Vikings total cap number is $106,467,417.00. These leaves them under the cap by 20.5 million give or take.
