Letter to Brett Favre: What I Wish I Could Say to Him
Dear Brett Favre,
I have rooted for you since I’ve watched football. I was 11 years old, rooting for some random green and yellow team because my dad did business with them. Since then, it has been a love affair with the Green Bay Packers.
I have always been a huge Favre fan. I love when people are unconventional and succeed. You throw the ball off your back foot, falling down, side arm, etc. You are one of the great quarterbacks.
I even rooted for you when you played for the New York Jets, a team I do not care for. I even rooted for you last year on Minnesota, a team I despise. I hoped the team would flop and fall on their faces, but that you would do well.
Why am I saying all of this? To prove that I am a true Favre fan. I have posters in my room, jerseys, pictures, scrapbooks, statistics, everything Favre-related.
Enough is enough already. I’m sick and tired of Brett Favre. You have turned from a team player that loves the game into a selfish, circus media icon. Yes, some of this is being played up by the media and you can blame the media for it.
All you have to do is come out and say you are retiring or not. We, as fans, do not need to have a tearful press conference in 2008, a quiet exit in 2009, and now media frenzy in 2010. This is insane.
Either retire or don’t, just make up your stupid mind already. Have you met Jennie Finch? She said it was the hardest decision of her life, but she retired from 10 years of softball. It was a media circus for less than a week and now some people barely remember she retired.
Learn from people like Finch. Get off your high horse and make a decision. Stop being selfish and waffling. Used-to-be-Favre-fans are done. Even former teammates think you are ridiculous.
According to the Associated Press, linebacker Nick Barnett said, “It’s like believing in Santa Claus. You get gifts, but you ain’t seen Santa Claus.”
A text message? Seriously? Wow, congratulations on being even less of a teammate this year. At least have the decency to call your teammates if you really are going to retire.
Bottom line, if you do retire, great, you deserve it. If you don’t retire, I hope the Packers knock you on your butt this year, but that you do well in the rest of your games this season.
Just quit being so selfish. You have a team in training camp preparing for the season as if you are playing. You have a city ready to root for you.
Don’t put the entire city on hold. Yes, it is a hard decision and one you do not want to regret. Look at all you have done. Do you have enough to last 16 games, plus playoffs if you make it? Is it worth it to get the money?
You can still coach or be involved with football without playing. Just make a decision and live with it. Let the entire country rest and not have to hear about this anymore.
And by the way, if you do actually make a decision, why not shock the world and actually stick with it this year?
